Sump pump failure is actually pretty coming in good ‘ol Minnesota. This past week in a 48 hr time period we received 16 calls for help from failed sump pumps and only one out of those had the proper insurance to cover the repairs. Water damage claims are more common insurance claims than fire claims yet nobody ever thinks about water and how destructive water damage can be. Even a category 1 loss (clean water) from an overflowing tub or sink can lead to serious destruction if not properly repaired.
I encourage everyone I meet to call their insurance agent and ask him or her if they are covered for sump pump failure if they have a basement and a sump pump. While you’re at it, sewer backup is not a bad thing to have as well if you have lower level bathrooms and the basement is finished. I also strongly suggest if you have a sump pump to get a battery backup and an alarm to alert you if the pump fails. A pump tends to fail at the worst time and you might not even know its failed for hours if not days later.
